What is PoE?

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a technology that transmits electric power and data over a single Ethernet cable to powered devices. With PoE enabled, only a network connection is required.

With PoE

One cable, two functions: electric power + data

  • Lower cable costs
  • Less space needed
  • Frees up I/O space for other uses

Without PoE

One cable for electric power, and another for data transmission

  • Higher cable costs
  • More deployment space needed
  • Occupies I/O space on devices

Device Types Using PoE Technology

PoE technology has been divided into two main power types: PSE and PD. Some devices, such as Ethernet switches, can be categorized as either PSE or PD.

PSE = Power Sourcing Equipment

Power sourcing equipment (PSE) is a PoE

provider. It delivers power and data to PDs.

PD = Powered Device

A powered device (PD) is a PoE receiver. It

receives power and data from PSEs.

What are the Benefits of a PoE Solution?

Expansion of Device Capacity

Multi-port PoE switches expand
the capability of end devices.

Higher Power Budget
Up To 90W

Mega PoE devices can extend transmission distance with a higher power budget up to 90W .

Activate Wireless
Network Service

Wireless devices with PoE enable data
transmission in outdoor areas.

How Should You Choose the Right PoE Equipment?

What are the PoE standards?

Below is the comparison chart of PoE standards.

Standard PSE maximum output power PD maximum input power Cable category Cable length PoE wire pairs
IEEE802.3af 15.4 W 12.95 W Cat3 100 m 2 pairs
IEEE802.3at 30 W 25.5 W Cat5e 100 m 2 pairs
UPoE 60 W 51 W Cat5e 100 m 4 pairs
Power over HDBaseT (PoH) Type 2: 60 W; Type 3: 95 W Type 2: 51 W; Type 3: Depends on cable length Cat5e/Cat6 100 m 4 pairs
IEEE802.3bt 90 W 71.3W Cat5e/Cat6 100 m 2 & 4 pairs

How many PDs can be powered by an Advantech PoE switch?

For common powered devices that require 13 ~ 25.5 W power input, Advantech 802.3af/at PoE switches can deliver

sufficient power for up to 20 PD devices up to a distance of 100 meters.

What is your power budget?

Advantech foresees a growing need for 90W PoE. Taking all user scenarios into consideration, we provide IEEE802.3bt-compliant 90W PoE Ethernet switches, PoE injectors, and 60 W PoE extenders.

How far can the networking distance be?

• 100 meters

The Advantech 802.3bt Mega PoE Ethernet switch EKI-7712G-4FMPI can serve 90W power and guarantee 71W is available at distances up to 100 meters.

• 200 meters

The Mega PoE Ethernet switch can serve 71W over 100 meters, and the PoE extender can further extend another 100 meters for up to 4 PDs with 30W power output available per port.

What is your network deployment environment?

For dusty or outdoor environments, our PoE switches come with a compact metal housing with an IP30 rating and support for -40 ~ 75 °C temperature operation, making them reliable regardless of external conditions.

Ethernet Gigabit Media Converter Connects & Powers Toy Manufacturer’s IP Surveillance Cameras

A toy manufacturer established 24/7 video surveillance for its campus. Considering most IP cameras would need to be installed in locations that were a long way from any power outlets, and under harsh outdoor conditions, it was sometimes challenging for equipment to function normally. In addition, the IP cameras had 100 Mbps copper interfaces, whereas the campus network infrastructure used fiber.

The manufacturer chose an Advantech industrial media converter to deploy its video surveillance system. The compact converter includes two 10/100/1000 Mbps Power over Ethernet (PoE) copper ports and an SFP fiber port. Along with an Ethernet connection, each of the Ethernet ports provides up to 25W to connected devices, eliminating the need to run dedicated power lines out to camera locations. The converter is built for extreme temperature ranges of 0 to 70° C to ensure the solution is on duty 24/7 regardless of drastic changes in temperature.

Relay of Network Transmission Technologies Brings Wind-Farm Operation Nearer to Management

Wind turbines designed in the early years were not necessarily designed with space for installation of sensors and communication devices. In addition, wind turbines are susceptible to extremely high or low temperatures depending on their locations. Tropical countries and high-latitude areas may experience such issues. Older turbines have caused issues in implementing effective operating and maintenance programs to optimize wind farms’ throughput.

Advantech’s solution assisted wind farm owners in resolving their operation and maintenance issues by offering industrial-grade PoE wireless AP and Ethernet switches. The DAQ devices were installed within the wind turbine to collect dynamic data, and Advantech’s industrial wireless AP receives the collected data by wireless communication. Subsequently, the Ethernet port on the AP is used to transmit data to the Ethernet switch, which further relays data from the high-standing wind turbine to the ground.

Industrial AI and Robotics Controller System for the Waste Recycling Industry

A recycling center needed an automated solution to help identify materials on the recycling line and enhance performance by accelerating object identification and classification capabilities. Advantech provided a new AI solution, MIC-770 + MIC-75G20, to meet the customer’s high volume processing edge computing requirements. The system has a high-performance processor and can accommodate one GPU card, and two 4-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) cards to connect eight cameras. Huge amounts of images can be captured and processed by the GPU card and analyzed by the user’s AI model to identify and classify objects. This improves the recycling center’s entire process by increasing both efficiency and accuracy.
