There is no single answer to this question as it depends on the specific needs of the network.
However, in general, unmanaged switches are more suited to small networks with fewer devices,
while managed switches are more suitable for larger networks with more devices.
Managed switches and unmanaged switches differ in three areas:
Capabilities
A managed switch has more capabilities than an unmanaged switch. Managed switches can be configured to meet the specific needs of the network. For example, managed switches can be configured to filter traffic, to set up VLANs, and to provide Quality of Service (QoS). Unmanaged switches cannot be configured and do not have these capabilities.
Costs
Managed switches are more expensive than unmanaged switches.
Security
Managed switches provide more security features than unmanaged switches. Managed switches can be configured to require passwords for access, to filter traffic, and to set up VLANs. Unmanaged switches do not provide these security features.
